Genre(s): Music, Documentary Rating: Not Rated By Metascore By User Score More From Gorillaz: Reject False Icons. 2-D is in 3D, it feels like he's out of character. I t’s surprising, given the virtual pop-band conceit, that there wasn’t a full-length animated Gorillaz film years ago. But Reject False Icons, after Ceri Levy’s Bananaz from 2008, is the second “behind the scenes” documentary. It’s telling: Murdoc, 2D, Noodle and Russel have slowly been overwhelmed in the course of the project’s two-decade history by its operational reality – which now verges on, as this film points out, 100 contributors. Making up for the fact that illustrator Jamie Hewlett’s gargoyle-ish ensemble are present only in flashy cutaways, his son Denholm gets to prowl behind the scenes on recording sessions for recent back-to-back albums Humanz and The Now Now, and the world tour that Damon Albarn ’s funky omnibus packed in around them. The downside of family involvement is that everything is strictly sanctioned. Albarn jokes in an after-credits scene about the directorial whippersnapper exposing all his “idiosyncrasities”. But they amount here to nothing more than being perpetually on muso cloud nine, orchestrating, among others, Mavis Staples, Little Simz, actor Ben Mendelsohn and one-time nemesis Noel Gallagher in the studio and on stage. Albarn’s capering, grufty mug and gold tooth make him resemble some mixing-desk Steptoe though, generally, he seems a lot happier than the self-regarding figure who sometimes appeared in Britpop documentaries. If there were personality clashes, we don’t see them, nor is there any inquiry into the band’s USP, the relationship between sound and image, or how Albarn corrals his collaborators. Hewlett opts for a nippy edit, never lingering on any vignette or performance. Which stops us savouring any single musical highlight – though Peven Everett, with his lightning-bolt vocals, has an energising effect, a more-than-able deputy for the late Bobby Womack. It’s ironic that the film doesn’t just reject false icons but, to some extent, the band’s cartoon avatars, too; in prioritising Gorillaz meatspace, it inadvertently confirms the marginalisation of the original concept. Still, with Hewlett Jr often chronicling events in cool monochrome, shooting in close proximity if not exactly total intimacy, this snappy scrapbook tips the hat to the infectious creativity of Albarn’s travelling circus. • Gorillaz: Reject False Icons is release on 16 December. • This article was amended on 18 December 2019. An earlier version misspelled the names of the Gorillaz members Murdoc and Russel as “Murdoch” and “Russell”.

Why every time when i hear Gorillaz i see The KLF. When i was in 4th grade Feel good inc. had came out around that time. I remember watching the music video on TV (VH1) and was so blown away. With the music, the art/visuals, it was something ive never seen and heard before. I was hooked. Around that time it was the start of me becoming an artist and drawing them non stop. As i progressed in my art, during my sophomore year i was really interested in making my own music. I would mess with garage band in my computer class and borrow my friends macbook during our class together to make music (thank you brett lol. Even if it was doggy do do at the time i had fun putting it together. I got a bass for Christmas that year and its my first instrument i learned on my own. What drawn me to Gorillaz was the influences from Hip hop, synth pop, samples, dub, rock, etc. as a kid growing up to old hip hop, alt-rock, 2000s electronic music, and pop their music showed me that you dont have to stick to or be a certain sound. Fast forward to now and i have a 2 singles out and a lofi EP coming out in January for my solo project, planning visuals for my music, learning how to animate, working with my producer friends building and growing our brand together, started a local label, been in a rock band, and learned how to mix and master. Gorillaz will be the most influential force to me and to the arts in general. Thank you for the video.

I accedently clicked this but i'm captivated. Person: So what bands do you like? Me: Gorillaz. Person: What genre are they? Me: T H E B A T H. I really don't understand the negativity towards this fun sendoff. A documentary can be a number of things, and some people will expect them to be a certain way. This was never meant to be some monumental film for Gorillaz, rather it is a celebration of the last two albums and their accompanying world tour. It gave me a renewed appreciation for Humanz, with a closer look at its initial production. I even listened to all of The Now Now after this, my summer 2018 soundtrack. Everybody that worked on these projects and performed together all seemed to be like a big family. The talented people that made these albums possible are featured. Damon and Jamie were really funny, too. You get to see some interesting behind the scenes action at the making of the music, and even for Jamie's sketches that would become official artwork for the band. While the title Reject False Icons does not really relate to the mantra/idea from Demon Days, the festival in LA looked amazing. I guess that some expected much more from the Gorillaz brand in a weird way. Denholm's Director's Cut was uploaded onto YouTube in three parts, which was a nice gift at the end of the year for the niche fan base. A part of his style was to have most of the film in black and white, with the concerts being in color to show off the light show of the stages and energy of the performers. While not groundbreaking in any way, this will appeal much more to Gorillaz fans such as myself.

Reject False Icons from the Rock It video. Reject False Icons was a Gorillaz marketing campaign to advertise their new video for the song, Rockit. Fans could download a file with the words "Reject False Icons" in white with a black background. The idea was for them to download it and print it off on sticky back paper and stick it onto false icons, for example, fashion magazines and pictures of models. The full line is "Respect False Icons, Reject False Icons". According to Noodle, "Reject False Icons means many things, one of them is to think for yourself". The phrase is meant to say that people should appreciate things like music and other media, but not idolize them. Also, they should pick what they like, not what the media likes. Ironically, the second half of the phrase is used by many people to shoot down what other appreciate (like other music artists) and idolize their own bands. Trivia The name of this campaign was one of the original names of Gorillaz's second album before the name was confirmed to be Demon Days.

Level 1 Dang that's pretty sad to hear... I was really excited to get some more of Jamie considering it's his own son who made the film... still excited to see it though! level 1 I would have rather have watched the movie without knowing this.... level 1 Whelp, well that'll be a hard pass from me. level 1 Bummer! I might still check it out though haha level 1 I remember, a year ago, when Denholm did a poll for fans, about what the documentary would be about: behind the scenes or live shows. Many fans voted for the Live Show.... and I couldn't understand why! Youtube is full of videos of their live shows! A behind the scenes would have been much more interesting, but new fans (I suppose) didn't understand that. This could be the cause of a documentary focused mostly on live shows! level 1 it’s a sweet sensation over the dub 4 points · 1 month ago I still have hope that we will get an animated tv show soon so I’m not really disappointed. level 1 well shit this is disappointing level 1 I fell into the waves, they crash and they break. 2 points · 1 month ago level 1 Yeah I think I'll pass on this then, unfortunately level 1 You guys do realize the site reviewing the film is an art focused site, right? Of course it'll have a slight bias in this case, I wouldn't pass off on the film without seeing it just going by one review. If a bad review stopped me from watching films, I wouldn't have seen some of my favorite movies. Besides, the film isn't even out yet.
Get the cool, get the cool CHUCHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
I reject the following false icons: government.
I didn't like it. I was expecting a lot more and got hugely disappointed. I spend 135 Danish Kroners. around 20.16 and 189,18 Swedish Kroners. But I'm happy that at least other people got something out of it.

Just admit it already. We all tried to dance like 2d at one point in our life. Well the movie was good no question but I think everyone who was in cinema can agree that the sound was just not loud enough and in that way I'm happy to watch it in good sound here again. Me the whole vid: waiting for 2D to speak 2D: dances whole video. Why is the song called empire ants. Noodle: adorable jumping bean 2-d: legssss Murdoc: pickle snack Russel: bless that poor potato soul. © CoolConnections, 2001–2020. God it seems like everyone, including the animators, were havin a blast during this shoot. The vid was great butttt 2-Ds part ❤ i loved it so smooth and cute. It's playing here in Toronto and I am happy, I'm so looking forward to this thing.

The fact this was actually aired on live prime-time television both scares and delights me. Lmao he's had white eyes since 2007 but no one even mentioned it until humility (sorry about saying 2005, I thought this came out the same year as Demon Days. This gives big 2010 vibes looks at description Oh... Me mata el baile de Yukimi. que tarde le preste atención a este tema pero ahora ya está entre mis favoritos. I cry every time I hear this song. Every. Damn. Time. Thank you Damon ❤️. Level 1 I feel like the LUCKIEST person here because it's playing in the theatre closest to me, like, 10 minutes! level 1 I was gonna see it but I got bronchitis literally the day of. level 2 Dang, sorry to hear that. Hopefully, it'll come out on DVD or direct download. level 1 I'm driving two hours to see it today! so excited! level 1 I am. The closest theater is 1 1/2 hours away so as soon as I get off of school, I gotta book strait ass to this theater. level 2 Closest, for me, is an hour away. level 1 I hope they give out little goodie-bags. level 1 I'm love drunk, I'm sorry. Am I losing you? 2 points · 1 month ago They added a showing in my city, so I cancelled the ticket I got for the city 100km/1h away. The tickets are even ceaper (12€ instead of 16, 50€) plus I don't have to pay for gas because now I can go by tram. level 1 I think I'll wait for some sort of physical or digital release. By the way, you guys know how in the U. S. a digital and Blu-ray release of a movie comes out 2 or 3 months after the movie came out? Does the U. K. do that too? Or at least Gorillaz? level 1 Yes I will be there at the Concord Mills mall AMC in NC level 2 I was going to go to that one, but kinda glad I didn’t because I have my calculus final tomorrow 😭 have funnn.
